Butterfly: the 1st Black Woman superhero!

Here's the tale of the 1st story that I ever had in Image Comics:

Back in 1971, writer Gary Friedrich (creator of Ghost-Rider) & comics artist Rich Buckler created a comic starring Butterfly, the 1st Black superheroine to ever appear in comics!

She was a soul singer, Marian Michaels, who fought crime in costume with a jet-pack and wings. (You can read that original story here.)

Unfortunately, Butterfly's publisher, Skywald, went out of business the next month, and never copyrighted the character.

Decades later, around 2018, I was recruited to write a Butterfly story for a new publisher that would focus on Silver Age-style comics. I decided to focus on her being a musician, and contrast that against the rhythm of a rooftop brawl.

That new publisher ultimately failed to launch, but not before I wrote the story, and writer Frank Fosco illustrated it.

So the completed Butterfly story sat in limbo for years, until the legendary Erik Larsen printed it as a backup story in his Savage Dragon comic in 2023.

So, now, I'm sharing my Butterfly comic here. Enjoy!
